Star Wars Day huge on social media

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU

It is not just any day today. It’s Star Wars Day.

You may be wondering why fans of the franchise adopted May 4 as the official day to celebrate.

No one really knows, but there are theories.

Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher may be the reason for the tradition, according to Time Magazine.

She was elected on May 4, 1979 only a couple years after the first Star Wars movie hit screens around the world.

An ad in a London newspaper read, “May the fourth be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.”

Wikipedia says the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Torontoat the Toronto Underground Cinema in 2011.

But Star Wars Day really didn’t gain traction until the internet was a part of our lives.

Check out the hashtags #maythefourth or #starwars on Twitter to see how huge the day has become. Have a look at the slide show below for a sample what's out there on social media.

Put on those Princess Leia hair buns, grab your lightsabre and join the international celebration.
