Kelowna school to host living library this week

KELOWNA – Students of a Kelowna middle school will get an education in their library this week — but not from any books.

The fourth annual Human Library event is a chance for students of KLO Middle School to meet with and ask questions of around 30 professionals from diverse backgrounds. According to a School District 23 press release, the Human Library project is an effort to break down stereotypes and prejudices, bring together the community and foster diversity.

“In a 21^st Century Learning environment, Human Library events also reinforce the role of a library as a Learning Commons, an important place to bring diverse people together, to provide meaningful social action among students and community members. Students will be given the opportunity to hear diverse stories and converse with a wide variety of community members.”

On Thursday, April 23, volunteers will be on hand where they can be 'borrowed' by groups of KLO students for 15 to 20 minutes. Event organizer Deborah Holmes says two special guests, KLO graduate and Mayor Colin Basran as well as Big White vice president of marketing Michael J. Ballingall, will both be taking part.
