HAMILTON – The UBC Thunderbirds won their first U Sports men’s volleyball title since 1983 on Sunday by knocking off the defending champion Trinity Western Spartans.
Fynn McCarthy had 11.5 points while Irvan Brar added 11 as UBC beat Trinity Western 3-0 in the championship match.
The Thunderbirds took the match 25-22, 25-18, 27-25.
Eric Loeppky had a game-high 13 points for the Spartans, who were looking to win their third straight national title.
Earlier in the day, the host McMaster Marauders beat the Alberta Golden Bears 3-0 to claim bronze.
Brandon Koppers and Matt Passalent each had 16 points as McMaster took the match 25-14, 25-16, 25-22.
Taryq Sani led Alberta with 10.5 points.
