Thurs, June 24 @ 7pm Most of us use some form of fossil fuel daily, whether natural gas for heating and cooking or gasoline for our cars. However, doing so pollutes and contributes to climate change. It will also become more expensive as the federal carbon tax increases from $40 to $170 per tonne by 2030. Add to this, the steady decline in cost of renewable technologies and it makes sense to move away from polluting forms of energy. There are benefits associated with switching to electricity and other renewables, especially for communities like Penticton that own their own energy utilities. New jobs are created, money stays within the community, air quality improves, and if the area is ahead of the curve, we have an opportunity to become a hub of renewables expertise. Power production by locally owned utilities has the added benefit of making the community more independent and resilient in the face of changing markets and weather events. Dave Mills from Dogwood BC will discuss these benefits and show examples of decarbonization projects that other BC communities have undertaken, as well as initiatives we can embrace in the South Okanagan.EMAIL info@firstthingsfirstokanagan.com to get the zoom link and the preparation materials.
