On Tuesday August 6th 2024 from 6pm to 8pm a panel event will be hosted Panel at the Okanagan College Penticton Campus in the Community Hall. The event, titled, ‘Fire Ecology and Wildfire Management,’ will focus on fire ecology in the Okanagan Similkameen. The event is coordinated by Green Drinks Penticton, a local social networking group out of Penticton that hosts social events to bring together those passionate about sustainability and the environment. The event is supported by the City of Penticton, the Regional District of the Okanagan Similkameen, District of Summerland, Tin Whistle, the BC Beverage Technology and Access Centre (BC BTAC), and Okanagan College. The panelists for this event are John Davies and Tim Lezard, each bringing their expertise and local knowledge of fire ecology and wildfire management in BC to the panel discussion. The panel will share their work on the land in relation to wildfires, current and future changes in fire ecology in the South Okanagan-Similkameen, and how we can better prepare our homes and communities for wildfires in an age of a changing climate. John Davies | A Principal at Frontline Operations Group Ltd, with an extensive background in wildland firefighting and wildfire management. John completed 10 seasons with the BC Wildfire Service Rapattack team, then in 2004 started Davies Wildfire Management where he completed over 25 community wildfire protection plans. Davies continues to foster his passion for community protection and wildfire management through his work with Frontline Operations. Tim Lezard | Tim Lezard is a Council member for the Penticton Indian Band, and also works with the Natural Resources Department as a land guardian. As a land guardian for sn’pink’tn (Penticton) Tim patrols the lands to protect all areas both on PIB reserve lands and within syilx Territory. Tim brings extensive knowledge of the land and a deep understanding of the changing landscape, along with his collaborative work across syilx Territory with other Bands and the Province to conduct traditional fire management. Doors will open at 5:30PM on Tuesday August 6th, the panel discussion will begin at 6pm, followed by a social event at 7pm where light refreshments, beer from Tin Whistle Brewing and drinks will be served.
