Description
One of our local favourites, Liam Nadurak, returns to the Nexus stage this week with a completely new approach, showcasing the work of Chet Baker. Liam is going “full Chet” for this performance, including vocals as well as trumpet in his arrangements. He is joined by Dan Smith (guitar), Alex Ward (bass, piano) and Will Friesen (drums) for this show.
Chet Baker was a definitive face in the West Coast "cool jazz" cohort, renowned for his lyrical trumpet playing and intimate, soft vocals. He rose to stardom in the early 1950s through his work with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and his signature rendition of "My Funny Valentine," earning him the nickname "The Prince of Cool." However, his career was severely derailed by a lifelong drug addiction that eventually resulted severe injury and legal problems. Despite these setbacks, he eventually relearned the trumpet and spent his final years as a prolific, nomadic performer in Europe.
This promises to be an outstanding performance and a fresh take on some standards you might recognize. Liam and each of his sidemen are outstanding musicians and it will be a rare treat to see them together weaving the rich tapestry of tunes planned for this performance.
