Raise-a-Reader BBQ Fundraiser

Project Literacy’s Annual BBQ Fundraiser takes place Tuesday, September 15th from 11:30am to 1:30pm at their new location 107 – 2293 Leckie Road, Kelowna. This year they are cooking up smokies with all the trimmings. Funds raised will go towards supporting their children’s reading program and providing literacy support for adults.

This year, Project Literacy is celebrating their 40th anniversary of providing literacy support in the Central Okanagan.

“Our one-to-one literacy tutoring program allows each of our volunteers to help build an adult learner’s confidence as well as their literacy skills,” says Project Literacy’s Executive Director, Paul Zuurbier.

“Our One-to-One Reading Program follows a similar model. Adult volunteers read with children in grades 1 to 4 twice weekly. These children are struggling to read at their grade level. If a child doesn’t learn to read well by grade five, they often struggle with reading and self-confidence all the way through school and are less likely to take any post-secondary education. The program is currently offered in 14 elementary schools.”

A smokie with all the trimmings, plus a pop and bag of chips is just $11.00! They are also selling fresh lemonade and cookies.
