About halfway between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice, May Day marks the beginning of summer when cuckoos return, hawthorn blossoms, and marsh marigold flowers. In Gaelic-speaking parts of Scotland it is known as Latha Buidhe Bealtainn, the Yellow Day of Bealtainn. Many of the rituals and celebrations of this time revolve around protecting people, crops and livestock, and encouraging growth. They highlight how connected to the land and seasons people’s lives have been from ancient times through to today.It’s important to understand how our modern lives are rooted in natural and cultural history as we work to restore landscapes for a more sustainable future.Storyteller Emma will weave tales for us around the fire to celebrate this special time of year.
