{"id":4383,"date":"2026-06-25T23:16:06","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T06:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/news\/7719198\/myanmar-torches-600-million-in-seized-heroin-meth-and-other-drugs\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T23:16:06","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T06:16:06","slug":"myanmar-torches-600-million-in-seized-heroin-meth-and-other-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/in420\/news\/4383\/myanmar-torches-600-million-in-seized-heroin-meth-and-other-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Myanmar torches $600 million in seized heroin, meth and other drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>YANGON, Myanmar (AP) \u2014 Thick clouds of black smoke billowed into the sky on the outskirts of Myanmar&#8217;s largest city Friday as authorities burned more than 50 tons of heroin, opium, ketamine, methamphetamine, marijuana and crystal meth \u2014 some $600 million of confiscated illegal drugs destroyed nationwide. <\/p>\n<p>Myanmar, also known as Burma, has a long history of drug production linked to political and economic insecurity caused by decades of armed conflict. <\/p>\n<p>It has been a major source of illegal drugs destined for East and Southeast Asia, despite repeated efforts to crack down, and has long been one of the world&#8217;s largest producers of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-united-nations-opium-survey-drugs-217ba470970142b3599bb62e1292aabc\" rel=\"noopener\">heroin and methamphetamine<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Violent political unrest in Myanmar following the military takeover in 2021 \u2014 which has led into a civil war between the military government and its pro-democracy opponents, as well as ethnic armed groups \u2014 has caused an increase in drug production, according to experts.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the military government claimed the country\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-drugs-heroin-methamphetamine-ice-opium-mongyai-6605677cf5f995988b9458bc1977a836\" rel=\"noopener\">largest-ever seizures<\/a> of illicit drugs and drug-manufacturing equipment, taken from a total of 12 drug production sites during a series of raids in the northern part of Shan state.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the street value of drugs destroyed was more than double last year&#8217;s total, Police Lt. Col. Aung Myat Soe, of Yangon&#8217;s Anti-Narcotics Police Force, told reporters at a bus station compound on the edge of the city where drugs were being burned.<\/p>\n<p>In Yangon alone, some $321 million worth of 31 different types of drugs were set ablaze, Aung Myat Soe said. <\/p>\n<p>Events were also held in Mandalay, and in Taunggyi, the capital of eastern Myanmar\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-shan-tnla-civil-war-kyaukme-f01ac6752ba36f0ef6c34a151510f45e\" rel=\"noopener\">Shan state<\/a> \u2014 areas closer to where the drugs are produced \u2014 to mark the United Nations&#8217; International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Many areas of Myanmar are controlled by long-established militias organized by the country&#8217;s various ethnic groups, many of which are involved in fighting against the military-run government in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-jet-fighters-min-aung-hlaing-su30-russia-d1c8d2469457127feef33b0e107020f9\" rel=\"noopener\">bloody civil war<\/a>, alongside pro-democracy groups that sprang up after the military seized control of the country from democratically-elected <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-aung-san-suu-kyi-amnesty-a9fe9907edb714d2cd0dd1ea81d76be3\" rel=\"noopener\">Aung San Suu Kyi<\/a> in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In elections that concluded earlier this year, which international observers said were neither free nor fair with major opposition groups banned, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-election-military-party-6c0e5330696d421e4c58d7a363d75175\" rel=\"noopener\">military leaders won a landslide victory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The government claims the country&#8217;s militias use illicit drugs to fund their insurgencies and are unwilling to engage in any peace process because they do not want to give up the lucrative drug trade. <\/p>\n<p>Some groups are known to be involved in the drug trade currently and in the past, but others also have sought to crack down on narcotics. <\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/myanmar-ceasefire-rebels-china-d42a111e8e68e24efe67142b16a21aaa\" rel=\"noopener\">Ta\u2019ang National Liberation Army<\/a>, for example, which captured significant swaths of the northern part of Shan state in the civil war before signing a ceasefire in October with the military, announced Thursday that it would destroy about $5.5 million worth of seized drugs in the group\u2019s controlled-area.<\/p>\n<figure data-type=\"media\" data-slug=\"dd4e588d3a86356cca5a85c2bd016d98d0e74922fe81cbc127f3314f51e74fa7\" data-filename=\"dd4e588d3a86356cca5a85c2bd016d98d0e74922fe81cbc127f3314f51e74fa7.jpg\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mapi.cp.org\/asset-photos\/bef32438-eba0-414d-8228-f1eaac0fb373\/dd4e588d3a86356cca5a85c2bd016d98d0e74922fe81cbc127f3314f51e74fa7.jpg\" alt=\"|\" title=\"|\"><figcaption>Firefighters spray water in front of illegal narcotics being burnt during a destruction ceremony marking the U.N.\u2019s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, on the outskirts of Yangon, Myanmar, Friday, June 26, 2026.
