NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Saying President Donald Trump has abdicated his responsibilities on climate change, California Gov. Gavin Newsom met with world and business leaders Wednesday to advance climate action and clean energy on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. <\/p>\n
State and local governments are leading, he said, as \u201cTrump is trying to recreate the 19th century\u201d by reopening coal plants, announcing new plans for oil drilling including off California<\/a>, and centering his energy policy on fossil fuels<\/a> that cause climate change.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s doubling down on stupid, and he\u2019s putting the American economy at risk,\u201d Newsom said in an interview. He called Trump the most destructive environmental president in American history and \u201can invasive species.\u201d<\/p>\n White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers used Trump\u2019s derogatory nickname for the governor, \u201cNewscum,\u201d in responding to the comments. She said his \u201cdoubling down on Biden\u2019s unpopular, unreliable and costly Green New Scam is stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNo one is surprised to see him whining about the climate change hoax at another conference instead of fixing the problems plaguing his state: out-of-control crime, the highest homeless population in the United States, and wildfire victims still waiting on state permits to rebuild their homes and businesses,\u201d Taylor wrote in an email. <\/p>\n Newsom has long been trying to counter Trump’s climate approach<\/p>\n Newsom, a Democrat eyeing a 2028 presidential run, has sought to counter Trump\u2019s stance on climate issues before. He went to the U.N. climate talks<\/a> hosted in Belem, Brazil in 2025 when Trump skipped it. <\/p>\n Trump prioritizes fossil fuels to produce electricity<\/a>. The Biden administration sought to ramp up clean energy<\/a> as a climate change solution. Trump began reversing U.S. energy policies his first day back in office. <\/p>\n Last year at the UN, Trump called climate change<\/a> the \u201cgreatest con job ever perpetrated on the world.\u201d He has hindered renewable energy, particularly offshore wind<\/a>, while China and other countries invest heavily<\/a>. China leads the world in adding wind and solar power, though it also added a lot of coal power last year. <\/p>\n Chinese President Xi Jinping begins his state visit<\/a> to Washington Wednesday. As the economic and technological competition between the countries escalates, Newsom said the Chinese leader is “cleaning our clock from an economic perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump and Xi are expected to discuss artificial intelligence as they meet this week. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the U.S. has proposed a new \u201c notification mechanism<\/a> \u201d for AI incidents that could affect national security.<\/p>\n Newsom also not happy with Trump AI stance<\/p>\n Newsom was critical of Trump for not doing more to add guardrails and instead listening to advice to let artificial intelligence \u201crip.\u201d Newsom announced Wednesday a group of experts who will advise on oversight recommendations in California<\/a>, including advancing the creation of a potential \u201ckill switch\u201d for rogue frontier models. <\/p>\n Trump was in New York on Tuesday. Unlike last year’s climate-focused speech, Trump defended his actions against Iran as he spoke at the U.N. General Assembly and made the diplomatic rounds<\/a>. <\/p>\n Newsom spoke at the United Nations on Wednesday alongside mayors grappling with the impacts of climate change and calling for collective action. He shared how the state is using renewables to change the way it produces and consumes energy, while reducing carbon pollution. While in New York, he also signed a new agreement<\/a> with Spain’s prime minister to strengthen collaboration on clean energy and climate issues and announced progress to link carbon markets with Washington state. <\/p>\n \u201cCalifornia is not going to sit back and watch this guy roll back the last half century.
