VERNON – The production and sale of cannabis in Vernon has received a huge boost from Vernon city council at its meeting yesterday.<\/p>\n
Council approved of changes to a zoning bylaw yesterday, Dec. 10, allowing for recreational cannabis sales, along with cannabis cultivation facilities and cannabis processing, according to a City of Vernon media release.<\/p>\n
The City says recreational cannabis stores are now permitted to operate in commercial zones — which cover village, regional, tourist and street commercial areas — resort commercial zones and comprehensive development areas.<\/p>\n
Cannabis cultivation facilities, which include medical, non-medical, micro-cultivation, nurseries and hemp uses, are allowed in agriculture zones within the Agricultural Land Reserve, and light industrial districts but only within enclosed buildings, the City says. These facilities will need licensing from the federal government to operate.<\/p>\n
Cannabis processing, micro-processing, research and analytical testing facilities are permitted in business park districts.<\/p>\n
The amendments were the subject of a public hearing on Nov. 26.<\/p>\n
