‘Canada Shore’ set to film in Kelowna again this summer and the neighbours aren’t happy

Love it or hate it, but Canada Shore is coming back to film another season in Kelowna this summer, and some people who live near the filming location are not impressed.

The show filmed its first season last summer which was released on Paramount+ in January. It’s one of many spin-offs of the classic Jersey Shore following 10 people living together in a mansion in Kelowna and their messy, loud shenanigans.

Residents in the McKinley area were notified that the show would be filming at a property on Shayler Place from June 26 to July 23 with the neighbouring house operating as the TV crew’s office.

The studio told residents it plans on abiding by local noise bylaws and filming regulations, but there could be some impact since the area will be busier than normal.

“We would like to provide some information to help you prepare for our arrival and anticipate how our activity may affect your daily routine. The neighbourhood will be busier than usual with our crew and essential work trucks in the area,” location manager Jacob Wideman said in the notice of filming.

There are some residents around McKinley who are trying to turn the show’s production into a political issue by writing to the City of Kelowna. They are trying to point out issues with permits and wildfire evacuation routes to try to get the city to stop the production.

The city said it has received the correspondence from the McKinley residents, but the studio hasn’t done anything wrong.

“At this time, the applicant has met the permitting requirements for the intended temporary Filming Permit use. Kelowna Fire Department has also assessed the site and has confirmed the applicant meets fire and safety standards,” City of Kelowna communications advisor Natalie Johal said in an email.

The first season of the show was also filmed at iconic spots around town like the Ok Corral, Kelowna Ribfest and a Tiki Time Tours boat.

Back in April, Paramount was taking applications for new people to appear on the show. Anyone from 19 to 26 who wanted “an unforgettable summer hanging out with fun roommates and causing plenty of drama,” was encouraged to apply.

“Renewing Canada Shore was an easy choice,” senior vice president for Paramount, Canada Katrina Kowalski said in a press release. “The series has quickly become a fan favourite, connecting with audiences through its unmistakeable, outrageous cast who may not depict stereotypical polite Canadian-ness, but have hearts much bigger than the chaos they bring.”
