A ranch in Salmon Arm has four adorable mini highland cows and recently opened there doors for visitors to stop by.
Amanda and Shayne Ermel moved to the Shuswap from Kelowna last year to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, and quickly found themselves on a new journey raising miniature cows on their farm called EE Mini Ranch.
“Why not mini cows, they’re so cute?” Amanda said. “It was Shayne who has always had a love of cows who finally convinced me to get one.”
After the first cow was added to the ranch in May, the couple instantly fell in love with the docile, sweet nature of the animal and added another cow from Utah, followed by two from BC that needed rehoming.
They pair have since opened their ranch for hour-long public visits that are quickly gaining in popularity.
“The cows are bringing calmness and joy to visitors,” Amanda said. “There is something about sitting with them and brushing them. They have this overwhelming vibe of calm and relaxation. We’ve had a few farm visits where people sat with a cow and were brought to tears because its so calming.”
Highland cows originated in Scotland and were bred with smaller breeds of cow to create mini highland cows. They are known for their sweet and docile nature.
The couple’s long-term goal is to breed the cows, mostly to enjoy the calming presence they give.
“If we can make a little money out of it that’s great but it’s mostly for our enjoyment and sharing that with other people,” Amanda said. “We see the joy and happiness they bring, the giggles and smiles, and it’s heartwarming.”
Visitors can schedule hour-long private visits to the farm for $30.
The cows are also hired for special events where people take pictures with them. Those costs are higher but Amanda is open to negotiation for price points that work for everyone.
There are also mini photography sessions available in partnership with a local photographer.
The couple doesn’t advertise their address on social media as it is their home and personal space, but those details are shared when booking.
“We’ve found people love spending time with the cows and the cows love getting cuddles and pets,” Amanda said. “They have brought a lot of joy to our life and a sense of purpose to be able to share these sweet little angels with the world.”
