Molly, Pepper and Squirt need special homes in the Okanagan

Three rescued dogs need some help adjusting to life as well-loved house pets in the Okanagan and the SPCA is hoping you have what it takes.

Molly, Pepper and Squirt roamed freely on a property with six other dogs before they were taken in by the BC SPCA. They’ve never lived indoors, are new to collars and leashes and they need to find a home, according to a press release from the BC SPCA.

South Okanagan-Similkameen BC SPCA manager Kiana Stearns said they’re getting used to new things that used to scare them like cars, strangers and leashes.

“They’ve made so much progress training with our staff, and they’ve really started to bond with some of them. We’d rather see them bond to a forever family instead of getting attached to us here at the shelter, so we’re hoping there are some special adopters out there in the community that would be willing to show these pups some love,” Stearns said in the release.

The team at the BC SPCA has been training them but they need to find local adopters who are willing to put in the effort to get to know them at the animal centre in Penticton prior to taking them home.

“Ideally, adopters would come by a few times to gain the dog’s trust before eventually transitioning to a foster-to-adopt arrangement. Sending them home with a stranger would be way too overwhelming for these pups at this stage, so we’re looking for people who would be willing to develop a relationship with their chosen dog at the centre before taking them home,” Stearns said.

Even though the dogs arrived together they are available to adopt individually. All three are believed to be one-year-old blue heeler and husky mixes.

Molly loves to snuggle and isn’t shy about asking for more attention. She’s “described as sweet, sensitive and loyal, blossoming into a fun, energetic, and talkative pup when she feels comfortable around someone.” Molly doesn’t do well with other dogs so she would be best suited for a quiet home where she’s the only pet.

Shelter staff describe Pepper as “sassy, playful, talkative, and intelligent. Highly food motivated, Pepper isn’t above bribery and can be won over with treats.” Pepper isn’t good with other dogs either so she should go to a home without other pets as well.

Squirt doesn’t quite understand the rules of fetch yet, but he likes to sit on your lap and loves to play. He has an old injury on his hind leg but that doesn’t slow him down.
