{"id":8132,"date":"2026-04-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/?p=7621684"},"modified":"2026-04-22T04:00:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T11:00:06","slug":"drought-conditions-and-water-restrictions-in-okanagan-kamloops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inhome\/news\/8132\/drought-conditions-and-water-restrictions-in-okanagan-kamloops\/","title":{"rendered":"Some Okanagan cities in drought are already restricting water use"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A dry winter has some municipalities around the Okanagan already putting in water restrictions in response to drought conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Districts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peachland.ca\/news\/stage-3-water-restrictions-effect#:~:text=The%20District%20of%20Peachland%20has,the%20demand%20on%20Peachland&#039;s%20reservoirs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peachland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summerland.ca\/city-services\/utilities\/water\/drought-response\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Summerland<\/a> are both on level three water restrictions with Summerland expecting to increase its drought level in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The restriction to once-a-week watering is necessary due to ongoing drought conditions and lower-than-optimal levels of upland lakes that feed Peachland\u2019s reservoirs,&#8221; the district said in a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osoyoos.ca\/waterrestrictions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Town of Osoyoos<\/a> is going into stage two restrictions on May 1, and it has already been dealing with low lake levels. The town had to close its Desert Sunrise Marina boat launch but it was reopened on Monday, April 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westkelownacity.ca\/en\/our-community\/watering-regulations.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Kelowna<\/a> is on stage two restrictions but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kelowna.ca\/city-services\/water-wastewater\/city-water-utility\/water-restrictions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kelowna<\/a> is still on its normal year-round restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kamloops.ca\/our-community\/environment-sustainability\/water-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kamloops<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rdno.ca\/gvw\/restrictions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vernon<\/a> are still in normal water restrictions, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penticton.ca\/city-services\/water-waste-water\/water\/water-restrictions#:~:text=Penticton%20is%20in%20Stage%201,Tuesday%2C%20Thursday%20and%20Saturday%20only.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Penticton<\/a> is going to go into its regular water restrictions on May 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The province as a whole has a healthy amount of snowpack, 92 per cent of normal, but the Lower Thompson is at 51 per cent of normal while the Okanagan is at 58 per cent of normal snowpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okanagan Basin Water Board\u2019s water science specialist Sandra Schira said drought conditions and water restrictions are different in each municipality so it\u2019s important for people to find out what their local drought scale means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, at this time, it&#8217;s not standardized across the valley what different drought stages mean. And so what that means in Kelowna might be different than in Penticton,\u201d Schira told iNFOnews.ca. \u201cWhat&#8217;s really important is for people to be aware of what their local water supplier is doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who are worried about increasing drought conditions can always plan ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt can be quite helpful to start thinking, as we&#8217;re heading into the summer, what you can do to reduce water use,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat plants you can start planting, that can make a really big difference for a lot of people if their
