{"id":8151,"date":"2026-04-22T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/?p=7622517"},"modified":"2026-04-22T18:00:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T01:00:03","slug":"in-numbers-kamloops-housing-starts-catching-up-to-kelowna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inhome\/news\/8151\/in-numbers-kamloops-housing-starts-catching-up-to-kelowna\/","title":{"rendered":"iN NUMBERS: Kamloops housing starts catching up to Kelowna"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Home builders in Kelowna have been complaining that <a href=\"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inhome\/news\/7962\/no-work-on-the-go-fewer-home-builders-in-kelowna-means-less-employment\/\">housing construction is slowing down in the city<\/a>, and now the numbers show that Kamloops is starting to catch up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelowna\u2019s housing starts, particularly single-detached homes, have been slower this year so far while the province as a whole has seen more housing projects break ground including in Kamloops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll have to wait and see whether this is just a blip, or the start of a longer-term trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the numbers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation<\/a> for the first quarter of 2026:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>28:<\/strong> Per cent. That\u2019s the year-to-date increase in housing starts in B.C. for 2026 compared to 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>22: <\/strong>Per cent. That\u2019s the year-to-date decrease in single-detached housing starts in Kelowna for 2026 compared to 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>39:<\/strong> That\u2019s how many single-detached housing starts there were in Kelowna for the first quarter of this year, down from 50 last year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>36: <\/strong>That\u2019s how many single-detached housing starts there were in Kamloops for the first quarter of 2026, up from 33 last year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>78:<\/strong> Per cent fewer housing projects started in Kelowna in March 2026 compared to March 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>12:<\/strong> Per cent more housing projects started in Kamloops in March 2026 compared to March 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>6:<\/strong> That\u2019s how many single-detached housing starts there were in Kamloops in March in 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>288: <\/strong>That\u2019s how many single-detached housing starts there were in B.C. in March 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>52,000<\/strong>: Dollars.
