{"id":8239,"date":"2026-05-06T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/?p=7635797"},"modified":"2026-05-06T04:00:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T11:00:20","slug":"why-its-nearly-impossible-to-grow-okanagan-sunflowers-on-your-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inhome\/news\/8239\/why-its-nearly-impossible-to-grow-okanagan-sunflowers-on-your-own\/","title":{"rendered":"Why it\u2019s nearly impossible to grow Okanagan sunflowers on your own"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve been out and about in the Okanagan you might have seen yellow flowers growing strong and wanted some for your garden, but you can\u2019t just take one and put it in a pot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arrowleaf balsamroot is a native plant that does well in the valley\u2019s warm, dry climate, but it\u2019s tricky to transplant and challenging to grow from a seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s absolutely impossible,\u201d Okanagan Xeriscape\u2019s executive director Sigrie Kendrick told iNFOnews.ca. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe roots of the arrowleaf balsamroot go down like six feet. You can never dig them out. That&#8217;s why people try and they are unsuccessful at doing so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joshua Smith from Xen Xeriscape Endemic Nursery is one of the few people who has figured out how to grow and sell the flowers for people\u2019s gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s highly secretive, he&#8217;s figured out how to propagate the arrowleaf balsamroot so you can purchase them from him, but I&#8217;ve heard of no one having any success in terms of harvesting,\u201d Kendrick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/hd-mediaitemid29756-8777.jpg\" alt=\"|\" class=\"wp-image-7635847\" title=\"|\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Arrowleaf balsamroot, otherwise known as Okanagan sunflowers, on Knox Mountain in Kelowna. You just have to collect quite a bit of seed because it&#8217;s a very low germination rate. It&#8217;s about two to five percent,\u201d Smith said. \u201cIn our nursery. We&#8217;ve spent quite a bit of time figuring out how to grow and sell it in a pot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arrowleaf balsamroot has historically been used for medicinal purposes and it&#8217;s edible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gathering wildflower seeds on your own is difficult but there are websites where they are available online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Smith said it&#8217;s important to check whether a mixed bag of seeds has any plants invasive to the Okanagan in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okanagan Xeriscape is having its annual xeriscape plant sale event this weekend from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 9 at <a href=\"https:\/\/wildbloomnursery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wild Bloom Nursery<\/a> at 840 Old Vernon Rd. in Kelowna where Smith will have a selection of native plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All hope isn\u2019t lost for scavenging gardeners who want to transplant a wild, local sunflower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith said the brown-eyed susan is a flower that looks similar but it\u2019s easier to grow in your yard. There is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xeriscapenursery.ca\/species-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">master list of native plants on Xen Nursery\u2019s site.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2026-05-05-at-3.50.32-PM.png?w=1024\" alt=\"|\" class=\"wp-image-7635800\" title=\"|\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A patch of brown-eyed susan flowers. are becoming more and more popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d say every year we get a little bit more busy on the residential side,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kendrick said people in the Okanagan are going to end up turning to native, water smart plants whether they\u2019d like to or not because of drought conditions and water restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe use more water per person than anywhere else in Canada,\u201d she said. \u201cI gave a presentation in Peachland on the weekend and
