Kelowna driver under investigation after fatal crash near Field

A woman in her 30s died after the car she was in crashed down a steep embankment on the Trans-Canada Highway near Field last week.

The woman was the passenger in a blue Chrysler PT Cruiser that was travelling through Yoho National Park on Highway 1, April 26, according to an RCMP media release.

Police say the PT Cruise – which was being driven by a Kelowna man in his 50s – crossed the centre line of the highway and then went off the road and down a steep embankment on the eastbound side.

The woman, of no fixed address, was not wearing a seatbelt, RCMP say. She was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The identification of her next of kin notification is still pending.

The driver sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Police have not ruled out the possibility the driver was impaired.
