Street racers doing 60 km/h over speed limit in Kelowna nabbed by RCMP

Two cars are in the police impound after the drivers were caught street racing in Kelowna.

An officer noticed the race happening while patrolling near Gordon Drive and Clement Avenue in Kelowna at around 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, according to an RCMP press release.

The vehicles involved were a green 2019 Ford Mustang and a blue and purple 2005 Chrysler 200.

On a stretch of road where the speed limit is 60 km/h the officer watched the two vehicles passing other motorists while reaching speeds beyond 120 km/h.

Once the racing vehicles  came to a stop at a red light on Clifton Avenue, the officer positioned his vehicle in front of the racers and directed them to pull over.

The drivers of both vehicles admitted to the offence. Their vehicles were impounded for seven days and were fined $368 each.

“These dangerous driving behaviours pose an extremely high risk, to not only the drivers of these vehicle, but also to innocent drivers and their occupants,” Kelowna RCMP Sgt. Mark Booth said in the release.

“We take these incidents extremely serious and therefore we hold these violators accountable, by removing their ability to continue these high risk actions.”
