iN VIDEO: Driver found guilty after semi smashed into tow truck, Mercedes near Golden

An Alberta man has been found guilty after he used a tow-truck like a jump ramp on the Trans-Canada Highway near Golden. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured or killed.

A BC Highway Patrol officer was working with a tow-truck driver to impound a Mercedes for speeding on Highway 1 in Yoho National Park around 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 8, 2023, according to a press release from police issued today, April 20.

The officer, the Mercedes driver and the tow-truck driver were out of the way when Dalvir Singh Jhattu, 38, ignored the flashing lights and drove his tractor trailer straight up the back of the tow truck.

Police released the dash camera footage of the crash to warn drivers to be careful and slow down around emergency flashing lights.

“Luckily the tow truck operator, the police officer, and the Mercedes driver were safely off to the side of the road, or they would certainly have been killed,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol said in the release.

“The tractor-trailer driver could easily have died as his truck rolled over and he became trapped.”

On April 8, 2026, Jhattu was found guilty of dangerous driving and was sentenced to a six-month conditional sentence, 90 days house arrest, a 12-month Canada-wide driving ban and conditions that prohibit him from possession or consumption of any alcohol or drugs.

“Normal speed limits exist for ideal conditions,” Cpl. McLaughlin said. “When road workers or emergency responders are at the side of the road, you are legally required to slow down even more.”
