Federal gas tax pause having inconsistent impact at the pump in Okanagan, Kamloops

Gas prices haven’t seen a consistent decrease in the Okanagan and Kamloops after a pause in the federal excise tax took effect Monday.

The federal gas price tax cut came into effect, April 20, but doesn’t appear to have translated into lower gas prices equally across the region.

In Kelowna, the cheapest gas price is down to $1.43.4, while in Kamloops it’s $1.69.9. In Vernon, the price of a litre of gas is $1.63.4 and in Penticton it’s $1.64.9.

The average gas price in B.C. has gone down by $0.07.5 to $1.83.8.

At the end of March gas prices were around $1.91 with the cheapest price at $1.89 in Kelowna. Before the Iran war started the lowest price was $1.07.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced last week a pause on the fuel excise tax until Labour Day. The cut saves people $0.10 a litre on gasoline and $0.04 a litre on diesel.

In recent days, the CAA’s gas price tracker has listed an average cost of $1.74 per litre at pumps across the country — more than 40 cents higher than a year ago.

The Liberals say this is a prudent way to tame prices at the pumps, at a cost of roughly $2.4 billion.

The Conservatives argue this isn’t enough to meet rising energy costs, calling for the pause in the excise tax to extend until the end of the year, as well as an end to clean-fuel standards and the industrial carbon tax.

Oil prices have gone down below $100 USD a barrel, with Brent crude at $95 USD and WTI Crude at $86 USD.

Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue with the U.S. blockade ongoing and the two-week ceasefire with Iran coming to its end.
