A teenager from Vernon struck two other teens with a pickup truck at a party in Lumby on the weekend killing one of them.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP were called to a party at a rural property in Lumby after someone reported that a pickup truck had hit a pedestrian around 11:50 p.m. on June 27, according to a press release from police issued today, June 23.

Police and BC Ambulance Service responded to the scene. When officers arrived they found out the pickup had been driving dangerously and hit two people.

A 15-year-old from Lumby died at the scene. Witnesses gave them first aid immediately and BC Ambulance crews tried to save them but couldn’t.

The second teen hit by the truck was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The pickup driver fled the scene.

“There were numerous youths present at this gathering who not only saw this tragic incident, but captured it on cellphone,” Cpl. Tania Finn said in the release. “Investigators were able to identify, locate and arrest the driver that night.”

RCMP arrested a 16-year-old from Vernon who has since been released with a court date. Police said the teen could be facing several charges.

The BC Coroners Service and police are still investigating the incident. The victim’s family has been notified and is receiving grief support.
