A man who threatened another driver in a road rage incident on the Trans-Canada in the Shuswap last week is facing several charges including resisting arrest.

Officers from the Salmon Arm detachment were called to the road rage report at around 8:09 a.m., Aug. 28, on Highway 1 in Tappen, according to an RCMP media release.

A driver of a red Honda Civic, armed with a machete, had threatened another driver.

When police spotted the suspect vehicle and tried to pull it over, the driver took off eastbound where officers from the Sicamous detachment were waiting with a roadblock at the east end of the Bruhn Bridge, RCMP said. The bridge is currently in a construction zone as part of the Trans-Canada expansion project.

The suspect tried to turn around on the bridge but was now blocked by the officers from Salmon Arm.

The driver fought with police as he resisted arrest and it took four officers to take him down and get the cuffs on.

Chiwetin Hong Wapachee, 34, is facing several charges including possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats, wilfully resisting a police officer, flight from police while operating a vehicle and dangerous operation of a conveyance.

Wapachee appeared in court for a bail hearing and was remanded in custody by the judge. He’s scheduled to be back in Salmon Arm court Oct. 13.
