iN VIDEO: Sneaky Penticton catalytic converter thieves caught on camera

Penticton RCMP have released surveillance video in hopes of identifying suspected catalytic converter thieves.

The video was recorded around 12:30 a.m. yesterday, June 15, in the 3000 block of Paris Street in Penticton, according to an RCMP media release.

The suspects were driving around the block in a silver sedan to target a vehicle that would be easy to remove a catalytic converter from, RCMP said.

The vehicle dropped off a passenger who approached a vehicle and began to remove the part.

The sedan drove around the block, picking up the passenger and stolen catalytic converter shortly after.

“There have been several recent instances of the theft of catalytic converters in the South Okanagan," Penticton RCMP Cpl. James Grandy said in the release. “Catalytic converters are part of a vehicle’s exhaust system, targeted for their precious metals and black-market value. We’re encouraging anyone who sees anything suspicious, in particular people seen loitering in parking lots, or someone peering underneath vehicles, to call police.”
