South Okanagan road fixed in four days after severe boulder damage

Green Lake Road in Okanagan Falls has been flattened out, and the boulder that took a chunk of out it has been crushed into a pile of rocks.

It looked like another one of Wile E. Coyote’s booby traps had back-fired after a large boulder crushed the road on May 20. But fortunately there were no animals or people below when it came tumbling down.

Geotechnical crews with B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation said the boulder was about 15 cubic metres in volume, and estimate that it fell from 200 to 300 metres above the road.

“There were six people involved in the team, using an excavator with a rock hammer and dump truck,” a spokesperson for the Ministry said in an email.

The road was reopened by May 24.

“We are pleasantly surprised that it was cleaned up so quickly,” said Caroline Webb, who was one of the first people to stumble upon the wreckage last weekend.

Webb said she’ll be extra cautious when she passes along that route from now on.
