Penticton bike lane makes it difficult for semi to clear corner

A trucker had a tough time turning onto Martin Street in Penticton earlier this week because the Lake-to-Lake Bike Route was in the way.

It happened March 8 where Martin Street intersects with Westminster Avenue West. The driver appears to have taken the corner wide, but a railing for the bike lane still managed to obstruct the large vehicle.

Video shared with Infonews.ca shows the stuck semi inching its way out backwards.

This stretch of Martin Street was reduced from two lanes to one in 2021 to make space for the bike lane. 

And it was not designed to be a truck route, according to Shane Mills, senior communications advisor with the City. 

"Our guys at this point don’t have any plans to change the design," Mills said. 

"I don't know why he was there, it was not designed for him,"

Mills said he is not aware of any other issues involving the separated bike lane and transport trucks in Penticton.
