North Okanagan man killed in Highway 97 crash

A 49-year-old Falkland man was killed yesterday after the vehicle he was a passenger in crashed on Highway 97.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release the single-vehicle fatal collision took place near the intersection of Salmon River Road at roughly 7 p.m. Nov. 8.

"The investigation has determined that a Ford Escape was travelling westbound on Highway 97 when it left the roadway and plunged down a steep embankment, overturning several times," the release says. "The passenger, a 49-year old Falkland man was ejected from the vehicle and sadly, was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Police say the driver was taken to hospital for assessment before being released.

"On behalf of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, I want to extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," Vernon RCMP Const. Chris Terleski said in the release.

Police say an investigation into the collision is still ongoing.

The RCMP provided no other information.
