Driver who fled scene of Highway 97 crash fights with Penticton police officers

Penticton RCMP officers caught up with the driver of a vehicle that hit a median on Highway 97 and tried to drive away yesterday afternoon.

Officers with the Penticton RCMP detachment and the highway patrol were called to a single-vehicle crash at around 4:45 p.m.yesterday, Aug. 1, on Highway 97, according to an RCMP media release. RCMP do not say exactly where on Highway 97 the crash happened.

Police say the man struck a median on Highway 97 and then fled, leaving leaving behind a field of debris and fluids.

When officers located the vehicle a short distance away, the man fought with police as he was arrested and refused to provide a breath sample.

Charges have been forwarded to the B.C. Prosecution Service.

That was one of 240 calls for service at the Penticton RCMP detachment over the long weekend.
