

iN NUMBERS: Holidays most dangerous time of the year for car crashes in Southern Interior
The holidays are for festivities, traditions, general cheerfulness, not car accidents.
When this magical time of year comes around there are hundreds of car crashes around B.C.
Just in case you need another reminder to drive safely during the holidays, ICBC has some data on annual Christmas and New Year’s car crashes.
For data purposes, ICBC considers Dec. 24 to Dec. 26 to be the Christmas period, while New Year’s is from 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 to midnight on Jan. 1.
Here are a few statistics you don’t want to be included in:
- 1,636: Car crashes happen in B.C. during the Christmas period each year, on average.
- 3: People are killed in car crashes during the Christmas period each year in B.C., on average.
- 357: People are injured in car crashes during the Christmas period each year in B.C., on average.
- 232: Car crashes happen in the Southern Interior during the Christmas periods each year, on average.
- 1: Person is killed each New Year’s in B.C., on average.
- 246: People are injured in car crashes each New Year’s in B.C., on average.
- 939: Car crashes happen in B.C. each New Year’s, on average.
- 159: Car crashes happen in the Southern Interior each New Year’s, on average.
- 9: Highways in B.C. are expected to get some snow on Christmas Eve.
