If you’re driving to or from the Okanagan and Kamloops to the Lower Mainland this BC Day long weekend make sure to bring extra snacks and downloaded podcasts because there’s going to be delays.

The Ministry of Transportation today announced that a section of the Coquihalla Highway, specifically between exits 250 to 256, between Hope and Merritt is undergoing drainage constriction.

There will be lane closures in the area because there are hazards that can’t be removed over the BC Day long weekend, the ministry said in a media release issued today, July 31.

The ongoing closure of Highway 1 because of wildfires is redirecting traffic to Highway 5, so the route will be extra busy.

Drivers have been warned to expect significant delays, and to make sure they have a full tank of gas and bring plenty of food and water for the journey.

The BC Day long weekend is dangerous for drivers. There are 424 crashes on average in the BC Interior every BC Day long weekend.
