New Brunswick teens arrested, charged after viral ‘car surfing’ video

FREDERICTON — Mounties in southeastern New Brunswick say three teens were charged after a vehicle was stolen and several crimes were allegedly committed.

RCMP say they received multiple reports Sunday of “car surfing” on a main arterial road in Moncton.

A social media video appears to show a boy sitting on the roof of a moving car on Vaughan Harvey Boulevard.

Police say they received reports involving the vehicle in the video as well as the youth suspects, and that the car was reported stolen.

Police say a 16-year-old boy, a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy were arrested.

Police believe the three youth are also suspected of break-ins and thefts from businesses and residences.

Pamela Fuselli, CEO of injury prevention charity Parachute, says car surfing doesn’t happen too often but she hopes this doesn’t lead to copycats in search of online fame.

“I am hoping that this is not a resurgence or a challenge that is going to be taken up through social media because it so dangerous,” Fuselli said in an interview.

“We don’t see them very often, but when we do see them, they can be very very dangerous and fatal in some cases.”
