A 13-year-old has been charged under the Motor Vehicle Act with numerous offences after they ran a stop sign on a e-bike and hit a car in the intersection Tuesday morning.

Officers were called to the crash at around 10:25 a.m., Sept. 1, in the intersection of 39 Avenue and 25 Street, according to an RCMP media release.

The youth was riding a non-street legal e-bike when they hit the vehicle. The young person wasn’t hurt as the e-bike and car weren’t going very fast.

“The youth may have been uninjured but was not unaffected by this incident,” Vernon RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Tania Finn said in the release.

The e-bike was rendered inoperable in the collision and the vehicle received minor damage.

The youth was driven home by police who spoke with their parent about the crash.

The 13-year-old has been charges with several licensing and driving offences which ill make it tough to get a driver’s licence.

RCMP are asking parents and guardians to be aware that not all e-bikes are created equal. There are licence requirements for different wattages, which is essentially the bikes power.

“Many of the e-bikes youths are currently operating are e-dirt bikes which have the same licencing requirements as a motorcycle,” the release read.
