Kelowna senior on mobility scooter struck, killed by bus

A 97-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a chartered bus while riding a mobility scooter in Kelowna.

On July 26, paramedics were called to the Benvoulin Road collision near Rampone Road and took the man to hospital for serious injuries, according to a Kelowna RCMP news release.

Police were called to the scene and brought a collision reconstructionist, who didn’t find criminality or impairment contributed to the fatal collision.

The man on the mobility scooter was attempting to cross Benvoulin Road and he was the only person injured and he later died in hospital, according to Kelowna RCMP.

Spokesperson Cpl. Steven Lang said the detachment offers condolences to the man’s family. He added that people near the scene had stopped to assist in the immediate aftermath.

“We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the individuals who stopped to render assistance at the scene,” Lang said.

Anyone affected by the incident that need support can contact Kelowna RCMP for assistance from the victim services team, he said.

Despite initially ruling out impairment or criminality, police are still investigating and requesting witnesses reach out to give statements or provide dashcam footage. Kelowna RCMP can be reached at 250-762-3300.
