{"id":4850,"date":"2025-08-27T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/?p=7329982"},"modified":"2025-08-27T05:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T12:00:00","slug":"in-numbers-how-we-crash-our-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwheels\/news\/4850\/in-numbers-how-we-crash-our-cars\/","title":{"rendered":"iN NUMBERS: How we crash our cars"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Over on iN Discussion, readers are going off about some recent traffic news involving excessive speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There seems to be general agreement that traffic fines aren\u2019t enough to offset the danger posed to others, so we thought we\u2019d take a closer look at some ICBC crash data for some context behind crashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>96:<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s the number of fatal crash victims in BC in 2023, above the five-year average of 88.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>29:<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s the percentage of those crashes that involved speed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>27:<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s the percentage of 2023 crashes that involved driver distraction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>21:&nbsp;<\/strong>That\u2019s the percentage of those crashes that involve driver impairment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>35:<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s the number of crash deaths in the BC Interior in 2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>129:&nbsp;<\/strong>That\u2019s the number of crashes at Dilworth Drive and Harvey Avenue in Kelowna in 2024, the worst intersection in the BC Interior.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>438:<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s the number of fatalities involving speed since 2019 across the province.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>392:<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s how many fatalities since 2019 involved distracted drivers in BC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>307:<\/strong>&nbsp;Number of impaired fatalities in the same time frame. These three factors account for the vast majority of crashes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>319:<\/strong>&nbsp;That\u2019s the number of crashes involving injured cyclists in the Southern Interior in 2024.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>368:<\/strong>&nbsp;That&#8217;s the amount in dollars for an excessive speeding ticket.
