{"id":5061,"date":"2026-01-25T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwheels\/news\/5061\/in-numbers-southern-interior-residents-want-us-all-to-slow-down\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T16:55:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T00:55:13","slug":"in-numbers-southern-interior-residents-want-us-all-to-slow-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwheels\/news\/5061\/in-numbers-southern-interior-residents-want-us-all-to-slow-down\/","title":{"rendered":"iN NUMBERS: Southern Interior residents want us all to slow down"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s not just cranky old folks shaking their fists at clouds that want to see lower speed limits in BC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people in the Southern BC Interior are on board with the idea of lower residential speed limits and more cameras to help with enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the numbers from a Research Co. poll:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>71:<\/strong> Per cent of people in Southern Interior approve of fixed speed cameras that measure speed as a car passes that could be put in school zones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>57: <\/strong>Per cent of people in Southern Interior said they approve of point-to-point enforcement cameras that measure a vehicle\u2019s speed and can be used to issue speeding tickets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>46:<\/strong> Per cent of people in Southern Interior say they see a car speeding on their street at least once a day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>65: <\/strong>Per cent of people in Southern Interior think a 30 km\/h speed limit on local streets is a good idea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>77: <\/strong>Per cent of British Columbians aged 18 to 34 think it\u2019s a good idea to reduce residential speed limits to 30 km\/h.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>58:<\/strong> Per cent of people in Southern Interior would like to see the speed limit on residential streets go down to 30 km\/h while keeping arterial roads at 50 km\/h.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>72:<\/strong> Per cent of BC NDP voters would like to see speed limits on residential streets go down to 30 km\/h, the highest rate for any provincial political party.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>46,570:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/transportation\/driving-and-cycling\/roadsafetybc\/intersection-safety-cameras\/statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Speeding tickets were issued in BC in 2024.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>80,430:<\/strong> Red light tickets were issued in BC in 2024.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>4:<\/strong> Per cent of speeding and red light violation tickets were disputed in BC in 2024.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>16: <\/strong>Million dollars. That\u2019s how much money the provincial government collected from red light and speeding violations in BC in 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And they&#8217;re
