What to know about the Tate brothers, social media influencers facing rape and trafficking charges<\/p>\n
LONDON (AP) \u2014 Influencer brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested Saturday in Miami after U.K. prosecutors said they brought further rape and sex trafficking charges against them.<\/p>\n
Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service said the new charges relate to four further victims and were brought after authorities received evidence from Bedfordshire Police in southeastern England. The charges include rape, assault, trafficking and offenses relating to \u201cindecent images of a child and extreme pornography.\u201d<\/p>\n
The charges announced Saturday, which bring the total number of alleged victims in the U.K. to seven, are the latest in a long-running international legal saga involving the brothers that has spanned the U.S., Britain and Romania. The brothers have denied wrongdoing.<\/p>\n
An attorney for the brothers, Joseph McBride, blasted the latest charges as \u201cfilth and slander.\u201d In a phone interview Sunday, he said he was confident the extradition request would ultimately be denied.<\/p>\n

5 family members found dead after flash flood in a scenic Utah canyon, authorities say<\/p>\n
BICKNELL, Utah (AP) \u2014 Five family members who had set out for a day of hiking were killed after a flash flood swept through canyons of southern Utah on Friday, law enforcement officials said.<\/p>\n
The victims were a captain in the Provo, Utah, fire department, his wife and their sons, according to fire officials. A daughter who was not on the trip survived.<\/p>\n
The family arrived Friday at Sunglow Campground in a scenic red rock canyon near Bicknell, Utah for their day excursion, the Wayne County Sheriff\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is believed the family fell victim to flooding caused by heavy rains,\u201d the sheriff’s office said in a news release.<\/p>\n
Although the sheriff’s office did not identify the victims, the Provo Fire Department confirmed in a social media post that a fire captain, Spencer Long, and his family members were killed.<\/p>\n

LIMA, Peru (AP) \u2014 A 5.5 magnitude earthquake shook the Andes region of Peru, killing at least six people, injuring more than 30 and displacing 300, authorities said Sunday.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake struck on Saturday at 9:24 p.m., with its epicenter located 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) west-southwest of the city of Sicaya in Huancayo province. It was 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) deep.<\/p>\n
Peru\u2019s National Civil Defense Institute said in a statement the total number of missing is still unknown. Several buildings collapsed or suffered structural damage, including the historic \u201cSantiago de Le\u00f3n\u201d church and former convent in Chongos Bajo, which was built in 1565 and designated as national heritage site for being a 16th century \u201carchitectural gem.\u201d <\/p>\n
Luis V\u00e1squez, head of the local civil defense office, told journalists that the use of rustic adobe materials in construction in that Andean area \u201chas contributed to the greater impact and damage.”<\/p>\n

Justice Department activates untested court for ‘alien terrorist’ deportations<\/p>\n
WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Trump administration has filed a first-ever petition to a secretive and dormant court created 30 years ago to consider government requests to deport so-called \u201calien terrorists\u201d from the United States.<\/p>\n
The Alien Terrorist Removal Court was established in 1996 but had never received a petition until this past Wednesday, when the Justice Department filed an application seeking the removal of an individual whose name is withheld from the single-page document posted on the court\u2019s website.<\/p>\n
The chief judge of the five-member court, Joan Ericksen, said in a written response to the petition that a hearing was held on Thursday during which the court had \u201cquestions about the nexus that the government alleges between the actions of the respondent and the specific sections and subsections it invokes with respect to those actions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe answers persuaded the Court that the Government could benefit from the opportunity for more thoughtful consideration,\u201d wrote Ericksen, a federal judge in Minnesota.<\/p>\n
She directed the Justice Department to provide more information by Wednesday.<\/p>\n
