British Columbia’s Crown power utility is planning to add more than 2,500 public charging ports for electric vehicles, tripling the size of its network by 2035.<\/p>\n
The province’s Transport Ministry says the expansion of BC Hydro’s network to 3,500 ports will be along major highway corridors and in communities across the province, supported by a $700-million investment.<\/p>\n
Energy Minister Adrian Dix says in a news release that more B.C. residents are purchasing electric vehicles as fuel prices increase, and the government needs to make sure people can count on a reliable charging network.<\/p>\n
The plan includes faster charging technology, larger charging hubs and new customer features such as washrooms.<\/p>\n
The ministry says “faster, future-ready” 200-kilowatt chargers will be the network standard, with 400-kilowatt ultrafast chargers at some high-demand locations.<\/p>\n
It says the expansion of BC Hydro’s current 917 ports at 190 locations will both support long-distance travel and help match growing adoption of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n
