{"id":7086,"date":"2026-08-25T08:23:56","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T15:23:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/?p=7829339"},"modified":"2026-08-25T08:23:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T15:23:58","slug":"kamloops-mans-death-prompts-petition-to-ban-e-scooters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwheels\/news\/7086\/kamloops-mans-death-prompts-petition-to-ban-e-scooters\/","title":{"rendered":"Kamloops man&#8217;s death prompts petition to ban e-scooters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A young Kamloops man is dead less than six months after e-scooter rentals were introduced to the city, and his death has prompted a petition to ban them from the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hunter Dennis, 18, has been identified through the petition just days after he died in hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;To honor Hunter&#8217;s memory and ensure the safety of all Kamloops residents, we urge the City of Kamloops to withdraw from the British Columbia Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project immediately,&#8221; the online petition reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dennis died four days after he crashed in the West End neighbourhood of Kamloops while riding rental e-scooter. Kamloops RCMP have seized the scooter. They <a href=\"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/news\/7829290\/kamloops-rider-dies-after-crash-on-rental-e-scooter\/\">do not believe he was wearing a helmet at the time,<\/a> according to a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paramedics rushed him to hospital around 4 a.m., Aug. 16, and police said there was no evidence another vehicle was involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of e-scooters has resulted in a rise in injuries among young people across the country, though Okanagan cities did see <a href=\"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwheels\/news\/6613\/okanagan-cops-cant-keep-up-with-illegal-e-bikes-hospitals-arent-trying\/\">a reduction after the first year following introductions of rental fleets.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dennis appears to be the first person to have died on a rented e-scooter in the Southern Interior since 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Kamloops, <a href=\"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwheels\/news\/5112\/rentable-e-scooter-program-to-launch-next-week-in-kamloops\/\">they were introduced in March<\/a> after the province offered to include the city within a BC pilot project. They are prohibited for riders under the age of 16, and riders must follow the same rules as a cyclist which includes a helmet requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The online petition, which has garnered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/prohibit-e-scooters-in-kamloops-in-memory-of-hunter-dennis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 700 signatures since launching on Aug. 22<\/a>, calls on Kamloops city council to withdraw from the pilot project and to lobby the province for a safety review of the program across
