{"id":7331,"date":"2026-09-01T11:36:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T18:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/?p=7857273"},"modified":"2026-09-01T11:36:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T18:36:19","slug":"uber-drivers-unionize-in-kamloops-okanagan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwheels\/news\/7331\/uber-drivers-unionize-in-kamloops-okanagan\/","title":{"rendered":"Uber drivers unionize in Kamloops, Okanagan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kamloops and Okanagan Uber drivers are are joining a first-of-its-kind union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">United Food and Commercial Workers will represent more than 1,000 gig workers in the Southern Interior, according to an advisory sent to news media today, Sept. 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes a year after Uber drivers in Victoria joined the union, which came to an agreement with Uber last year. It was a first for not only Uber drivers but app-based gig workers in Canada at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drivers in Kamloops, Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton will now be part of the country&#8217;s only union for Uber drivers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UFCW and Uber drivers plan to release more details at a news conference in Kelowna on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uber Canada and the national union signed an agreement four years ago, paving the way for drivers to access representation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2025 ratification in Victoria was the first time Uber drivers were enrolled under the union&#8217;s umbrella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/ca\/en\/newsroom\/uber-ufcw-four-year-milestone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to a news release in 2022,<\/a> the agreement enables drivers to appeal account deactivations, while the union also represents drivers when health and safety issues arise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not clear whether there have been changes in driver benefits or conditions since the agreement was signed, but Uber Canada said it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/ca\/en\/newsroom\/uber-canada-and-ufcw-canada-reach-historic-national-agreement-to-benefit-drivers-and-delivery-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reversed more than 1,000 account deactivations.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They will join Victoria as part of Canada&#8217;s first-ever union for Uber drivers.
