Oil giant Chevron confirmed that it will expand its operations in Venezuela, just days after President Donald Trump announced an ambitious deal<\/a> to develop the nation\u2019s oil reserves<\/a> and give the Pentagon a stake in the profits.<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told the Trump administration Tuesday to \u201cstop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough,\u201d as he pushed back against a fresh wave of taunts<\/a> from Washington. Carney said U.S.-Canada trade talks could<\/a> resume if Washington becomes serious about negotiations.<\/p>\n

And a record percentage of Americans \u2014 about 9 in 10 \u2014 believe there’s widespread corruption in the U.S. government, according to a new Gallup poll<\/a> released Wednesday. That\u2019s up 10 percentage points from last year. <\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s keynote address, which had previously been announced for Thursday, will now happen Wednesday night, according to Rick Gorka, a convention spokesperson.<\/p>\n

Trump will also then speak Thursday night after Vice President JD Vance\u2019s address to close out the Dallas gathering, he said.<\/p>\n

The two-day event, which has been dubbed \u201cTrump-a-Palooza\u201d by the Republican National Committee chairman, is being held to try to bolster Republican enthusiasm ahead of this fall\u2019s midterm elections, which will determine which party controls Congress during Trump\u2019s last two years in office.<\/p>\n

Trump administration backs OpenAI in New York Times\u2019 copyright case over training of chatbots<\/p>\n

The Trump administration is wading into a legal fight between OpenAI and the New York Times<\/a>, backing the ChatGPT-maker\u2019s argument in a closely watched case<\/a> over how it builds its AI technology by ingesting and processing millions of news articles.<\/p>\n

In court papers filed Tuesday, the Justice Department supported OpenAI\u2019s argument that training its AI models on troves of writings found on the internet is protected by the \u201cfair use\u201d doctrine of copyright law.<\/p>\n

The Justice Department argued that \u201cthe creative possibilities and public benefits\u201d of training large language models on such content \u201cfar outweigh any competitive harm.\u201d<\/p>\n

The New York Times said Wednesday that the administration is siding with AI companies at the expense of the American creators \u201cwhose work they stole.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump says he wants to meet with Putin, but when the \u2018war is ending\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to do it when we\u2019re ready to do a peace deal,\u201d Trump told reporters of a meeting with Putin. \u201cWe want to have good relations with Russia, Ukraine, with everybody. Be great for business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said he could get a meeting \u201cimmediately,\u201d but that he\u2019d rather meet when the war is close to ending.<\/p>\n

Trump, having visited with Jon Voight, wants to protect the Hollywood film industry<\/p>\n

Trump told reporters that the award-winning actor Voight, known for \u201cDeliverance\u201d and \u201cComing Home,\u201d visited the president and urged him to help the film industry, which is increasingly traveling to other countries to save on production costs.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany countries give tremendous incentives to take our film industry,\u201d Trump said, adding that he\u2019s going to \u201coffer the tax credits that other countries are offering.\u201d<\/p>\n

The proposed legislation would be called the Motion Picture, Television and Entertainment Revitalization Act, the president said, adding that it has union and bipartisan support.<\/p>\n

\u201cHollywood is dead, and they wanted to be revived,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d like to get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump won\u2019t commit to sending Iranian opposition arms after calling on people to rise up<\/p>\n

The president on Tuesday night, after the latest round of back-and-forth strikes with Iran, posted on social media, \u201cWhen are the Iranian people going to rise up and fight?\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked on Wednesday if he was ready to send Iran\u2019s opposition arms to try to take out the Iranian theocracy, Trump demurred.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d love to tell you that, but it wouldn\u2019t be appropriate to say,\u201d Trump said. \u201cBut I mean, I understand their plight. They\u2019re being shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis calls on Trump to replace Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth<\/p>\n

Tillis, a Republican, wrote in a post on X Wednesday that Hegseth is \u201ccreating a leadership void at the top of our military ranks.\u201d<\/p>\n

The post comes after the resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who Tillis said was \u201cthe right man at the right moment.\u201d Several other generals and high-ranking officials have resigned or been ousted in recent months.<\/p>\n

Tillis urged Trump to find a new leader at the Pentagon who will \u201cretain and empower our military talent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have never witnessed more inept management of the brave men and women who serve our country,\u201d Tillis said of Hegseth. \u201cHe is intimidated by competence and retreats to ginning up culture wars instead of soberly attending to the vital work of our national defense and the health and well-being of our fighting force.\u201d<\/p>\n

The North Carolina senator was the final deciding vote on Hegseth\u2019s confirmation in January 2025 after expressing concerns about his leadership potential.<\/p>\n

Trump says he\u2019ll campaign for Alaska\u2019s GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan, who\u2019s facing another Dan Sullivan<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a very good senator named Dan Sullivan,\u201d said Trump, referring to the incumbent Republican lawmaker, who is now in a general election against Democratic candidate Mary Peltola and another man named Dan Sullivan<\/a>. The mirror names have caused quite a kerfuffle, with accusations that the latter Sullivan was in the race merely to confuse voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have a phony Dan Sullivan,\u201d said Trump, speaking with reporters, before he criticized Alaska\u2019s ranked-choice voting system that picks the top four finishers to move on to a general election.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a long trip, I love Alaska,\u201d said Trump, \u201cI will go to Alaska to help Dan Sullivan get elected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump says Venezuela is \u2018not ready\u2019 for elections<\/p>\n

Asked about the possibility of Venezuela holding elections now that it has been nearly eight months since the U.S. toppled that country\u2019s president, Trump replied, \u201cI just don\u2019t think they\u2019re ready yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe took them out of a dictatorship, and we\u2019re getting along great with the government,\u201d Trump said. He added of elections, \u201cWe want that. And they want that.\u201d<\/p>\n

A U.S. raid in early January deposed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. His replacement, Delcy Rodriguez, recently signed a deal allowing U.S. interests to tap the country\u2019s vast oil reserves.<\/p>\n

Trump said Rodriguez also backs eventually holding elections in Venezuela but insisted, \u201cThey\u2019re not ready yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump says he\u2019s relieved after Tiger Woods\u2019 no-contest plea<\/p>\n

Tiger Woods<\/a> pleaded no contest to a reckless driving charge, with his driver\u2019s license suspended for five years on Wednesday following a March rollover crash<\/a> in Florida, where he initially was accused of driving under the influence.<\/p>\n

Body camera footage<\/a> that was taken shortly after the crash shows Woods, who is a longtime friend of Trump, taking out his phone after the crash and telling a deputy, \u201cI was just talking to the president.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump, in an exchange with reporters, said he thought the resolution of the case was fair.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told him that a long time, \u2018Why don\u2019t you get somebody to drive you?\u2019 So, he\u2019s going to have somebody drive him from now on,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnd, you know, he\u2019s just a very special guy. I\u2019m glad that was resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump says Iran war won\u2019t be affected by the election because \u2018I\u2019m not running\u2019<\/p>\n

The president insisted he doesn\u2019t think the Iran war will last \u201cmuch longer.\u201d But, he added, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter. And I\u2019m not affected by the election.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not running. But my party is running and I\u2019m going to help my party,\u201d Trump said. \u201cBut I think my party respects the fact that we\u2019re not allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president has repeatedly shrugged off suggestions that political pressure is mounting on him to end the war with the midterm elections now looming.<\/p>\n

But Trump\u2019s comments contrast with his previous comments. Trump said during a rally for Sen. Darline Graham, where she ultimately won her runoff race, \u201cPretend, please, that I\u2019m on the ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump says he\u2019s \u2018happy\u2019 that Prince Harry and wife Meghan will depart the US for the UK<\/p>\n

\u201cI was not a fan,\u201d said Trump, speaking to reporters.<\/p>\n

Trump said he had good relationships with Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, and he thought the couple \u201ctreated the royal family with great disrespect; I didn\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced earlier this month they were bound back across the pond for an extended stay, but that they wouldn\u2019t resume their working roles as members of the royal family.<\/p>\n

Musing on it, Trump finished, \u201cIf I were the Royal Family, I would not have taken them back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump says White House helipad is \u2018essentially\u2019 finished<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just completed it, essentially, today, one of the most beautiful heliports you\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something very special,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd we built it a little ahead of schedule. And it came out even more beautiful than I thought.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has suggested that crews were hustling to finish the helipad on the South Lawn ahead of a White House visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month.<\/p>\n

Trump said of Xi, \u201clove to have him\u201d coming.<\/p>\n

Sean Duffy said he\u2019ll ask for more money for air traffic control<\/p>\n

Standing aside a seated Trump, the transportation secretary said that while Congress allocated the agency $12.5 billion for air traffic control, \u201cwe need additional money for software.\u201d<\/p>\n

Air traffic control has come under increased scrutiny after an American Airlines passenger jet fatally collided<\/a> with an Army helicopter last year. Earlier this month, an airline jet was cleared to take off as the president\u2019s Marine One took off.<\/p>\n

Duffy said there will be an announcement about the request for additional funds in the next 30 days, but he didn\u2019t specify how much he\u2019d be asking for.<\/p>\n

Trump meets with travel industry leaders at White House<\/p>\n

The president welcomed top leaders in the industry to \u201ccelebrate record-setting summer travel in the USA,\u201d sitting flanked by representatives from American Airlines, Hilton, and Caesars Entertainment, among others, as well as Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.<\/p>\n

Trump touted travel boosts from the FIFA World Cup, as well as celebrations for America\u2019s 250th birthday, before turning toward the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the summer that showed the world America is back,\u201d Trump said, and now, \u201cwe want to make this the best Olympics of them all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio says massive oil deal doesn\u2019t affect US commitment to restoring democracy in Venezuela<\/p>\n

The secretary of state is pushing back against criticism that a massive oil deal with Venezuela has weakened the Trump administration\u2019s commitment to restoring democracy there.<\/p>\n

In an interview aired Wednesday, Rubio said the administration\u2019s goals remain to stabilize the country, assist with its economic and social recovery and then support a democratic transition through free and fair elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of that remains a priority of this administration, and it\u2019s something we\u2019re working towards,\u201d he told Fox News host Brian Kilmeade in an interview recorded Tuesday.<\/p>\n

But Rubio said those would take time, noting that it has been only nine months since former President Nicolas Maduro was toppled in a U.S. military operation. He said Eastern European nations took four to five years to transition to democracy after the collapse of the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can do it much faster here,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re pushing very hard on it.<\/p>\n

DC mayor says city could benefit from \u2018world-class golf\u2019<\/p>\n

As Trump eyes changes to the golf course at East Potomac Park to draw prestige golf events, Muriel Bowser said the city could \u201cstand to attract world-class golf.\u201d<\/p>\n

But she also said it\u2019s important that the public still be able to enjoy the park, a scenic space on the Washington waterfront popular for running, biking, fishing and picnicking.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe question is, for us, we still need public access,\u201d she told reporters after an event focused on using sports to draw visitors to the nation\u2019s capital. \u201cPeople need to be able to access the park and Hains Point and get around, drive around, ride around the park.\u201d<\/p>\n

At 250, the United States still faces a military-civilian divide<\/p>\n

In a nation that celebrates its military history, the responsibilities and burdens of military life fall more heavily on some families and communities than others. Most American adults either don\u2019t serve or aren\u2019t very connected to the people who do and their families.<\/p>\n

These days, the military includes about 2 million people on active duty or in the National Guard and reserves, a tiny portion of the roughly 230 million adult citizens and legal permanent residents in the country.<\/p>\n

The public doesn\u2019t always pay attention unless there\u2019s a crisis, like the concerns over mental health for USS Abraham Lincoln sailors<\/a> who had been on an expanded deployment as part of the U.S. war against Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a military-civilian divide, a gap in understanding and connection that shapes public policy, the realities of everyday military life and the views and stereotypes each side holds about the other.<\/p>\n

Pro-Trump group launches Trump-focused ads ahead of midterms<\/p>\n

Securing American Greatness is running new ads touting the president\u2019s record ahead of the November elections.<\/p>\n

One celebrates the passage of policies like \u201cNo tax on tips,\u201d Social Security and overtime, and credits Trump with lowering the prices of eggs and prescription drugs, even though overall consumer prices have continued to rise and remain a top concern for voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s fighting for you every day. Help him finish the job,\u201d the narrator says.<\/p>\n

The second features footage of Trump at an Ultimate Fighting Championship fight night and the group\u2019s president calling him \u201cthe toughest, most resilient person that I\u2019ve ever met.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group has booked nearly $1 million in ads so far, according to AdImpact, which tracks ad reservations.<\/p>\n

The nonprofit previously spent big supporting Trump in the 2024 and also helped promote Republicans\u2019 \u201cBig Beautiful Bill.\u201d<\/p>\n

Energy secretary Wright says US \u2018not taking any oil \u2019 from Venezuela<\/p>\n

On a visit to Caracas, Wright said the US. is \u201cnot taking any oil here\u201d in its deal to develop Venezuela\u2019s oil reserves<\/a> and give the Pentagon a stake in the profits.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a deal between a commercial enterprise that\u2019s operating in Venezuela today,\u201d Wright told Bloomberg TV Wednesday. \u201cWe\u2019re just coming in as a partner, a passive partner … with very active controls to make sure highest business practices are followed, and to work with them to bring more capital so we can accelerate the development of these (oil) reserves.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the deal, the U.S. is entering a joint venture with North American Blue Energy Partners, a company owned by Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt. The company is already the second largest operator in Venezuela, behind Chevron.<\/p>\n

Wright is expected to meet with acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez and announce agreements with energy companies.<\/p>\n

Now Apple has matched Google in showing \u201cLake America\u201d to US users<\/p>\n

Apple\u2019s move followed competitor Google<\/a> days after Trump ordered a new name<\/a> for the body of water. Users outside of the U.S. still see the name the lake has had since before the U.S. and Canada existed.<\/p>\n

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum told<\/a> Fox this week that Trump had reached out to the company \u201cdirectly\u201d<\/a> about the change.<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s executive order on Friday directed the Interior Department to update the lake\u2019s name in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, as one of the latest provocations<\/a> during his trade war with Canada.<\/p>\n

MapQuest declared that it won\u2019t change Lake Ontario\u2019s label, and was topping the charts for downloads of free apps Wednesday in Apple\u2019s App Store. The app owned by California-based System1 also gave users the option<\/a> to name the lake \u201cwhatever you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marco Rubio says Iran will \u2018continue to feel the squeeze\u2019 as hostilities resume<\/p>\n

The secretary of state said the US will continue pressuring Iran until it drops any nuclear weapons ambitions and ends support for terrorism in the Middle East and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe core and central issue is in the end that Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want money for two things, to sponsor terrorism and to obtain a nuclear weapon,\u201d he told Fox News host Brian Kilmeade in an interview aired on Wednesday. They spoke on Tuesday shortly after Trump announced that the U.S. had resumed military operations against Iran in and around the Strait of Hormuz, but before Iran retaliated by attacking American interests in the region.<\/p>\n

Rubio said \u201cthey keep shooting at things\u201d in the strait, and so the U.S. \u201cwill continue to target those things that pose a threat to our forces and to international shipping.\u201d<\/p>\n

Will a 100-year deal giving US control over Venezuelan oil survive future administrations?<\/p>\n

The Venezuelan Constitution states that such arrangements must be approved by the National Assembly, which has not happened, wrote Ian V\u00e1squez, vice president for international studies at the Cato Institute.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe deal lacks legitimacy since it was agreed to with a dictatorship that has clung to power for decades through violence and by committing what was probably the largest electoral fraud in Latin American history in 2024,\u201d V\u00e1squez wrote. \u201cThe agreement was also reached under overwhelming pressure, military and otherwise, from the United States. As such, any future Venezuelan democracy will question the deal, thus undermining confidence in the current arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n

US energy secretary promotes Trump deal to control Venezuelan oil<\/p>\n

The private company the Trump administration is creating to control a huge part of Venezuela\u2019s oil reserves<\/a> is a joint venture with North American Blue Energy Partners \u2014 a detail the White House had withheld for days. NABEP, owned by Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt, is already the second-largest operator in Venezuela, behind Chevron.<\/p>\n

Energy Secretary Chris Wright promoted the deal Wednesday on \u201cSquawk Box\u201d on CNBC.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we\u2019re doing is increasing the confidence for private businesses to come do deals in Venezuela, directly with the government of Venezuela, and possibly also with the partnership between NABEP. This is President Trump\u2019s grand plan to replace conflict with commerce,\u201d Wright said.<\/p>\n

Analysts are skeptical, saying it will take years to revive Venezuela\u2019s oil industry<\/a>, and questions remain about whether Venezuela\u2019s acting President Delcy Rodr\u00edguez<\/a> has the legal authority to give the company 100-year rights over 17 oil fields with reserves of 65 billion barrels.<\/p>\n

Trump said major US oil companies are reinvesting in Venezuela. ExxonMobil says otherwise<\/p>\n

Trump has eyed Venezuela\u2019s oil since the capture of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a> and he\u2019s been pressing to get U.S. businesses back into the country. \u201cWe have Exxon going in, we have Chevron going in. We have our big oil companies going in,\u201d he said in January, and suggested again on Monday that U.S. oil majors were readying for a return.<\/p>\n

Other than Chevron, which already operates in Venezuela, there is no evidence of that. ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods said in January that Venezuela was \u201c uninvestable<\/a>,\u201d and a company spokesman said this week that \u201cnothing has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marco Rubio downplays CIA chief\u2019s visit to Moscow as \u2018routine\u2019<\/p>\n

The U.S. Secretary of State is downplaying the significance of CIA chief John Ratcliffe\u2019s visit to Moscow last month, saying it was a \u201croutine\u201d trip aimed at keeping communications channels open.<\/p>\n

Reports emerged that Ratcliffe warned Russia during his visit about assistance to Iran and its military position in its war with Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States does need to be able to communicate with Russia (and) his visit there was largely routine in that sense,\u201d Rubio said in an interview with Fox News host Brian Kilmeade that aired on Wednesday. \u201cThis is not unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t part of any sort of broader initiative,\u201d Rubio said in the interview that was recorded on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Chinese government expresses \u2018serious concerns\u2019 after man\u2019s death in ICE custody<\/p>\n

The Chinese government is pressing for answers after a Chinese man died hours after being taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a U.S. territorial lockup.<\/p>\n

Lianyong Wei, 51, died early Aug. 23 at a hospital in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, ICE announced in a press release Tuesday. ICE said his cause of death was under investigation.<\/p>\n
