{"id":7716,"date":"2026-10-09T04:17:25","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T11:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/news\/7950116\/bus-collision-with-truck-kills-at-least-28-people-in-tanzania\/"},"modified":"2026-10-09T04:17:25","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T11:17:25","slug":"bus-collision-with-truck-kills-at-least-28-people-in-tanzania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwheels\/news\/7716\/bus-collision-with-truck-kills-at-least-28-people-in-tanzania\/","title":{"rendered":"Bus collision with truck kills at least 28 people in Tanzania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) \u2014 A passenger bus was in collision with a timber truck and burst into flames in eastern Tanzania early Friday, killing at least 28 people, a fire and rescue official said.<\/p>\n<p>The crash occurred at Mkambarani on the Morogoro-Dar es Salaam highway as the bus traveled from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya, said Joseph Mwasabeja, acting commander of the Morogoro regional fire and rescue force.<\/p>\n<p>The truck was heading from Iringa toward Dar es Salaam and attempting to overtake other vehicles when it collided with the bus, Mwasabeja said at the scene. <\/p>\n<p>The bus was destroyed by fire. The number of injured was not yet known, though some had been taken to a hospital, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Scholastica Ndunga, a spokeswoman for Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital, said it would release figures later for the dead and injured brought there.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2025, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/d0ce3a9a756b1b77047f25ac46952a10\" rel=\"noopener\">a collision between two buses in Tanzania\u2019s northern Kilimanjaro region<\/a> killed at least 37 people. Both vehicles caught fire. President Samia Suluhu Hassan subsequently urged stricter adherence to road safety rules.<\/p>\n<p>Africa has the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/d4e243d9807bbb60f9804d575094310e\" rel=\"noopener\">world\u2019s highest road death rate<\/a>, with about 26 deaths per 100,000 people compared with a global average of around 18, according to the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa.
