{"id":6611,"date":"2025-03-18T10:45:28","date_gmt":"2025-03-18T17:45:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwine\/2025\/03\/18\/okanagan-distillers-quenching-thirst-for-bourbon-during-trade-war-with-us-2\/"},"modified":"2025-05-21T09:19:54","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T16:19:54","slug":"okanagan-distillers-quenching-thirst-for-bourbon-during-trade-war-with-us-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwine\/news\/6611\/okanagan-distillers-quenching-thirst-for-bourbon-during-trade-war-with-us-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Okanagan distillers quenching thirst for bourbon during trade war with US"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A couple of distilleries in the Okanagan are working to meet an increase in demand for their bourbon-based whiskey as American brands are being pulled from BC Liquor Store shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have three different styles of bourbon and the demand on bourbon specifically is over 2,100% since the trade war began, it\u2019s ridiculous,\u201d said owner at Okanagan Spirits Tyler Dyck who is also the president of both the Craft Distillers Guild of BC and the Canadian Craft Distillers Alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quite similar right across Canada at the distilleries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, premier David Eby directed BC Liquor stores to pull all products manufactured in Republican states off of shelves which included bourbon made in Kentucky and Tennessee,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2025PREM0032-000187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and in a statement issued March 10<\/a>&nbsp;directed all American booze be pulled.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two bourbon-style whiskey producers in the Okanagan filling that gap with value-added, locally crafted bourbon, Dyck\u2019s company and Urban Distilleries in Kelowna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRemoving red state bourbon meant people didn\u2019t have access to that type of corn-style whiskey, I think that\u2019s why Canadians looked around to see what else is in their own country,\u201d Dyck said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an increase in demand to be a Canadian. Like in hockey, when someone insults your team, it\u2019s time to drop the gloves and fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"468\" width=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/infotel.ca\/news\/medialibrary\/image\/hd-mediaitemid108435-4801.png?q=85\" alt=\"Vernon-based Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery makes Bourbon, Rye and Single Malt Whiskey.\" title=\"|\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vernon-based Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery makes Bourbon, Rye and Single Malt Whiskey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Image Credit: SUBMITTED\/Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whiskey is produced all over the world, with Scotland being arguably the most famous of the whiskey producing countries,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwhiskyday.com\/what-is-bourbon\/#:~:text=Bourbon%20is%20a%20%EE%80%80type%20of\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to World Whiskey Day.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>American whiskey includes bourbon, a type of whiskey distilled from a mash made mostly of corn, that originated in the Republican state of Kentucky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a whiskey to call itself a bourbon its mash has to have 51% corn at minimum, and be distilled at 160 proof or less. The distillate must be stored in charred new oak barrels at 125 proof or less and not contain additives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okanagan Spirits produces a number of whiskeys, three of which are award-winning bourbon-based whiskey made from grain corn grown by farmers in the North Okanagan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur bourbon has won gold on the world stage because it\u2019s unapologetically Canadian, it\u2019s terroir specific,\u201d Dyck said. \u201cCorn whiskey has a beautiful honeycomb note and is gentle and smooth, with caramel and vanilla notes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/infotel.ca\/newsitem\/another-okanagan-criminal-with-100-convictions-released-back-into-community\/it108389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Another Okanagan criminal with 100 convictions released back into community<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople looking for value-added Canadian alternatives and are pleasantly surprised, it\u2019s better than the bourbons south of the border, which are commercial, big industry bourbons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One bourbon whiskey made at Okanagan Spirits is called BLK BRBN that is chocolate malted and aged in custom-heavy toasted, charred white oak barrels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Distiller at Urban Distilleries in Kelowna, Sonia Martinez, said demand for her bourbon-style whiskey called Urban Burban is also increasing. She started distilling whiskey a decade ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been getting a lot emails from local establishments asking if we carry bourbon lately,\u201d she said. \u201cOur bourbon is 75 per cent corn and the rest is malted barley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur bourbon is a smooth bourbon.
