I’ve met a ton of Maritimers here, it’s a cool way to bring everyone together.”

While BC has a strong shellfish industry, lobster must be flown here from the other side of the country.

The American lobster is the only species of lobster in Canadian waters and they’re found along the Atlantic coastline and Continental Shelf from Labrador to North Carolina, according to the Canadian Encyclopedia. They have been accidentally introduced to the Pacific Ocean in the past, but there isn’t evidence of reproducing populations.

Cameron has a good system for keeping the catch fresh while being transported across the country.

“The live lobsters are packed with a wet paper towel over them and icepacks for temperature control,” Cameron said. “They need wet paper towel because they need dampness in the air in order to breathe. They can stay out of water for a long time. When kept cold and damp they are perfectly good for a couple of days.”

He also gets cooked lobster from the family operation in Nova Scotia.

“My dad boils them in the Bay of Fundy sea water and packs the meat in Styrofoam boxes with ice packs,” he said.

Kelowna resident Austin Cameron holds up lobster he had shipped from Nova Scotia. In that case we’d message everyone to let them know, but the lobster will still be good for a few days.”

Cameron grew up in Kentville, Nova Scotia and moved with his family to Kelowna when he was 12. He spent the winters attending school and playing hockey, and the summers in Nova Scotia where his parents have a seasonal seafood restaurant and lobster exporting business.

Half-way through a degree in finances at Arizona State University, this spring his finance internship was dropped, so he returned to Kelowna for the summer to amp up his lobster selling business.

“I’d done it sporadically in previous summers and in 2023 I sold 120 lobsters in an hour out of the Canadian Tire parking lot in Penticton,” he said. “That’s when I realized how much demand there was.”

This past Canada Day, Cameron’s dad got up in the wee hours in Nova Scotia to cook and pack 700 lb. of lobster. It was shipped out and arrived the next day. Cameron loaded it into his van and sold it at four different locations within hours.

At a farmers’ market in Canoe this month, he sold 60 lb. of lobster in less than an hour.

There are 41 lobster harvesting areas in five provinces in Atlantic Canada with lobster sold live and in hundreds of processed forms to retailers around the world, according to the Lobster Council of Canada.

“At its peak, my dad’s export plant was selling two million pounds of lobster worldwide, mostly to South Korea and Tokyo,” Cameron said.

Processing plants are governed by the federal government to meet strict quality standards. The industry is sustained through a limited number of traps, staggered fishing season and the protection of small lobsters and egg-bearing females.

In BC, there are numerous other shellfish options that are locally farmed and harvested including oysters, scallops, mussels and clams. Shellfish farming has been a part of BC’s history for more than a century, with the province currently producing almost half of the oysters in the country, according to the BC Shellfish Growers Association. BC farmed oysters are famous at oyster bars around the world.

The geoduck clam is the largest, burrowing natural clam that lives in Alaska, BC and Washington state, and has been farmed in BC since the mid 1990s, while Manila clams were accidentally introduced from Japan in the 1930s, and have been farmed here since 1985.

The Pacific oyster also originated in Japan and is now the most widely farmed species in the province. There are also blue mussels, gallo mussels and Japanese scallops produced here.

If it’s fresh lobster you are after The Lobster Guy in Kelowna has you covered.

“I have two years to finish my finance degree strong and then I’ll be working full time selling lobster in Kelowna,” Cameron said. “Every shipment I bring in is getting bigger as demand grows and I want to keep supplying fresh stock at affordable prices.”

<a
