{"id":8552,"date":"2026-07-15T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/?p=7737957"},"modified":"2026-07-15T18:00:04","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T01:00:04","slug":"kamloops-only-meadery-showcasing-locally-grown-flavours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/inwine\/news\/8552\/kamloops-only-meadery-showcasing-locally-grown-flavours\/","title":{"rendered":"Kamloops&#8217; only meadery showcasing locally grown flavours"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doors of Kamloops\u2019 only meadery opened this week on the banks of the South Thompson River after years of hard work and preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A soft opening on July 11 saw numerous friends, families and strangers come through the doors of the Lion&#8217;s Head Meadery tasting room, with visitors trying out five crafted meads with different acidity levels and flavour profiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe start with our traditional mead that has honey, water and yeast with no additional fruit added,\u201d said Bernita Wienhold-Leahy who owns the business with her husband Leroy Harder. \u201cNext, we go to our pear mead, then blueberry, raspberry and haskap berry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mead is the oldest alcoholic drink on earth and is made with fermented fruit, honey, yeast and water. Wienhold-Leahy said it tastes like a fruit wine with an added honey taste. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/BeeBox-FlowersLions-Head-jpg.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"|\" class=\"wp-image-7742004\" title=\"|\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Some of the bee hive producing honey for the mead. SUBMITTED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The couple makes their mead with fruit and berries sourced from their property or from nearby properties, and the honey comes from the now 124 bee hives Harder manages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each different mead at Lion&#8217;s Head Meadery has a creative name with a bit of story behind it. For example, the raspberry mead is called &#8220;Ida\u2019s Ruby&#8221; after Greek folklore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIda was Zeus\u2019s nursemaid who fed him milk and honey, and mead is known as the milk of the gods,\u201d Wienhold-Leahy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each flavour of mead has a unique, artfully designed label, and all of them show the Lion&#8217;s Head, which is a rock formation behind the couple\u2019s property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/meads-in-a-row.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"|\" class=\"wp-image-7739335\" title=\"|\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lion&#8217;s Head Meadery in Kamloops features different flavours of mead. FACEBOOK<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/news\/2370004\/new-kamloops-meadery-plans-to-make-honey-wine-with-help-from-local-bees\/\">The dream for the meadery began in 2022<\/a>, when the couple turned their garage into a meadery with equipment for fermenting, mixing and bottling, but it took more time and effort to get running than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is what I envisioned but it took a lot more work to get it going and we had to learn about bottling and labelling, that was the tough part,&#8221; Wienhold-Leahy said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Now we have the doors opened, we\u2019ve relaxed a bit more. This is going to be the fun part.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now donning a big, beautiful wooden sign, a comfortable tasting room and soon-to-be picnic area outside, the meadery is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kamloopswinetrail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about to be added to the Kamloops Wine Trail<\/a>, which attracts locals and tourists alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/infonews.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lions-Head-Entry.png?w=1024\" alt=\"|\" class=\"wp-image-7741969\" title=\"|\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">SUBMITTED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are a lot of people who are tasting mead for the first time and it\u2019s fun watching their reactions,\u201d Wienhold-Leahy said. \u201cMany have had fruit wines but see mead has more depth to it because it uses honey instead of sugar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;One man was just wowed. We\u2019re very pleased with the responses from people so far.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tasting room at 4006 Shuswap Road is open every day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and tastings are free with the purchase of two bottles of mead.
