PENTICTON – The regional district wants to explore the possibility of setting up a sister region in France known for its wine production.<\/p>\n
A director’s motion introduced at the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen’s regular board meeting, Sept. 5, requested staff look into the feasibility of entering into a “twinning agreement” with a wine region in France.<\/p>\n
Directors appeared to be lukewarm toward the idea, questioning the financial and jurisdictional implications of such a move.<\/p>\n
“I would be leery of putting money towards this,” said Cawston director George Bush, raising questions about its costs.<\/p>\n
He said input from the winery association might also be useful.<\/p>\n
Summerland director Doug Holmes said the research could reveal how much it would require the regional district.<\/p>\n
Keremeos Director Manfred Bauer wondered if the regional board was the right vehicle from which to work towards a twinning agreement. He said organizations such as Destination BC or the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Authority might also be suitable groups to front such an idea.<\/p>\n
The board voted in favour of staff investigating the matter.<\/p>\n
