The Latest: California finalizes June primary results

Secretary of State Alex Padilla has certified California’s presidential primary results. His report shows more than 8.5 million people, or 47.7 per cent of registered voters, took part in the election.

The turnout rate finalized Friday just surpassed the lowest turnout rate for a California primary without an incumbent president in the last quarter century. That was 47.5 per cent in 1992.

More than 5 million people, or 59 per cent of those who voted, cast mail-in ballots. That’s the most in any California primary.

The official report shows there were few changes to the election outcomes since the June 7 election.

Hillary Clinton held on to her decisive 53 per cent to 46 per cent win over Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary.

Donald Trump won the Republican contest with nearly 75 per cent of votes.

California’s secretary of state is expected to certify the results of the June primary election, when an estimated 8.5 million people, or 47.6 per cent of registered voters, took part.

Preliminary data show few results changed in the weeks of vote-counting following the June 7 election. The final report due Friday will finalize outcomes and provide additional demographic information.
