VERO BEACH, Fla. – Authorities say a Florida deputy at a high school for a training session accidentally shot himself in the hand.
A statement from Indian River County Sheriff’s Maj. Eric Flowers says the deputy was trying to clear his weapon when it discharged on Friday morning. A bullet struck him between his ring and middle fingers.
The statement says no students were on the Vero Beach High School campus at the time. It doesn’t say whether the accident happened during the training session.
Flowers says deputies applied a tourniquet while waiting for an emergency crew to take him to a hospital, where he’s being treated.
