Lloydminster Bobcats and West Kelowna Warriors advance at RBC Cup

LLOYDMINSTER, Sask. – The Lloydminster Bobcats and West Kelowna Warriors will meet in the RBC Cup final.

Both teams won in the semifinals of the Canadian junior-A tournament on Saturday to advance to the championship game.

Connor Sodergren had the eventual winner for West Kelowna in the first period of its 4-1 win over the Brooks Bandits.

Jake LeBrun and Rylan Yaremko each had a power-play goal for the Warriors, while Sodergren assisted on Kyle Marino’s even-strength goal. Matthew Greenfield made 31 saves for the win.

Ty Mappin responded for Brooks, as Garret Hughson turned aside 28 shots.

Things got out of hand in the third period with several penalties handed out. Kelowna went 2 for 14 on the power play and had 30 minutes of penalties. Brooks went 1 for 7 with the man advantage and racked up 154 minutes of penalties.

Earlier Saturday, Ryan Chynoweth scored twice to lead Lloydminster past the Trenton Golden Hawks 6-2.

Kris Spriggs had a goal and an assist for the Bobcats, while Noah Bauld, Christian Lloyd and Nick Quillan also found the back of the net. Alex Leclerc made 18 saves for the win.

Danny Hanlon and Lucas Brown replied for Trenton. Daniel Urbani stopped 32-of-37 shots in net.

The final will be on Sunday afternoon.
