4 cars of Amtrak train derail in North Carolina; no injuries

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – An Amtrak train carrying automobiles and passengers derailed in North Carolina, but officials say there were no injuries.

A statement from Amtrak says Auto Train 53 derailed in Halifax County late Wednesday night, with the four rail cars carrying vehicles remaining upright. According to the statement, the 394 passengers and crew continued on to Florida. The cars were placed back on the rails and were also heading to Florida on Thursday. No passengers’ vehicles on the train were damaged.

Amtrak officials say the derailment is under investigation.

As a result of the derailment, Amtrak says its automobile carrying trains were cancelled.
