Severe thunderstorm watch underway in much of Southern Interior

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN – After a wet and wild weekend in the Interior another round of thunderstorms could hit the region.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Nicola, South Thompson and Okanagan Valley regions for Monday, May 25. The weather office notes conditions are favourable for storms that could produce hail, strong wind gusts, heavy rain of 15 to 20 millimetres per hour and localized flooding.

While much of the region had rain over the weekend, and even some thunder, Cache Creek was hit by flash floods following a severe storm on Saturday and is currently under a state of local emergency with several properties under evacuation order.

Environment Canada is calling for near-normal highs in the 19 to 22 Celsius range today with a 60 per cent chance of rain and risk of a thunderstorm. Temperatures are expected to warm up over the week and will be accompanied by a mix of sun and cloud. More rain is expected heading into the weekend.
